One of the most infamous torture devices of the medieval period, the rack was designed to stretch the human body beyond its natural limits. The accused would be tied with ropes by the wrists and ankles to rollers at both ends of a wooden frame. As the rollers turned, the body would be pulled tighter and tighter, dislocating joints and eventually tearing limbs from their sockets.

Used widely across Europe, including in the dungeons of the Spanish Inquisition and the Tower of London, the rack was favored not only for its cruelty but also for its ability to extract confessions. Victims often confessed to crimes—real or imagined—just to end the excruciating pain.

 The Iron Maiden – A Coffin of Spikes
